The cookery capital of Mexico. Known as "The Land of the Seven Moles." Oaxaca is the capital and main city of the Mexican state of the same name. It is located in the Oaxaca Valley in the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains Oaxaca is the most complete tourist destination in the country. Oaxaca is the historic home of the Zapotec and Mixtec peoples. City is in Spanish colonial style. Oaxaca is a city of almost constant celebrations, a city of traditions and a city of people who keep ancient cultures thriving in their everyday lives. 

Monte Alban
Monte Alban has the largest set of ruins near Oaxaca city. Monte Alban is impressive for its huge plaza and northern and southern platforms from which you can see much of the countryside. The Zapotec people (also known as "rock people") built this site atop some of the highest mountains in the area.

Zocalo
Town square - the heart of Oaxaca. Most visitors to Oaxaca find themselves constantly returning to the zocalo. It is excellent building now used as restaurants and cafes, as well as Alemeda Park.

Santo Domingo Temple
It displays a series of artistic and religious symbols all of which exhibit the beauty of the Churrigueresque style. Near to it the Cultural Center of Santo Domingo. This cultural center is divided into five phases for touring. The fifth and final phase is the Temple of Santo Domingo de Guzman.

Cathedral Church
It is located on one side of the city's main square (zocalo, facing the Alameda de Leon. The present cathedral's construction was commenced in 1702, and completed in 1733. There is a notable collection of XVI and XVII century paintings, and the sacristy contains portraits of the bishops of Oaxaca. Other churches are Basilica of the Soledad, Temple of San Felipe Neri and Temple of San Agustin.

Macedonio Alcala Theater
The building was originally called Casino Luis Mier y Teran, later it was named Teatro Casino Jesus Carranza, until it finally acquired the name of Teatro Macedonio Alcala.
It was built in 1903 and finished in 1909. The theatre is an icon of the City of Oaxaca and a part of its history. It is an example of eclectic architecture.

Ex-convent of Santa Catalina
It was built in 1579 by Hernando Cavarcos. Convent was begun to build in late sixteen century and was completed during the eighteen-century. Due to the nuns’ secularization ordered by the Reform Laws of 1862, the convent was used as a jail and the temple and atrium became the Municipal Palace. Posterior, the temple was a movie house.

Rufino Tamayo Museum of Pre-Hispanic Art

An important Museum in Oaxaca. It is situated in beautiful building, adds a unique dimension to the Pre-hispanic art scene in the City. This Museum has 1059 pieces distributed in five permanent exhibit halls - Olmecan and Zapotec cultures in the first hall, the marvel of the funerary sculpture or the Totonacan in the second hall, Huastecan or Teotihuacan deities of the third hall, Mayan culture in 4th hall and the Mixtecan culture in 5th hall.
