Ocho Rios, located on the north central coast of Jamaica, is the favorite stop for cruise ships in the Caribbean. The town itself does not have much interest, but the area that surrounds Ocho Rios has plenty of attractions.
Bay of Ocho Rios
One of the best things to see in Ocho Rios are the the huge cruisers that periodically visit the bay of Ocho Rios. When one of these cruise ships visits the town, everything changes. As soon as the ships arrive, the streets of uptown Ocho Rios get crowded with tourists with colorful T-shirts, bermuda shorts, and a wallet full of American dollars.
Public Beach
Close to the harbor there is a public beach. The beach is closed with fences. You have to pay a fee to get in. Actually you do not pay to lie on a beach, but to lie on a beach without hustlers. That is the main reason of the fee.
Arts and crafts market
A few yards from the beach is a huge arts and crafts market, the one you see in the picture. Here you will find the typical Jamaican souvenirs: wooden fish and parrots, T-shirts and Jamaican caps.
Open Air Mall
The main reason to visit Ocho Rios is to buy a gift. If you could not find what you were looking for in the arts and crafts market, you can go to the open air mall. In this shopping plaza you will find expensive jeweler's, watch shops and top class clothes.
Dunn's River Falls
They are very beautiful, but the best of this cascade is that it is possible to climb it. You start here, in front of the beach and climb for 200 feet with the water falling all over you. There are steps carved on the rocks, but you can also choose the hard way. You can leave your clothes & valuable sin he locker's available. If your camera is not waterproof, you better leave it in the lockers too. You can rent rubber sandals, and hire a guide at the office box. And once you get to the top of the falls, you can walk down the stairs to the beach.
